Representing the region's architectural magnificence and rich history, Baldev Mahal is located in Jammu's Poonch District. This exquisite palace, built between 1904 and 1926 AD under the rule of Raja Baldev Singh and Raja Sukh Dev Singh, provides a window into Poonch's former splendor. Located on the eastern bank of the Betar River, with a stunning view of Poonch Illaqa, this location bears the name of Raja Baldev Singh. Views that stretch from Pir Pass to Toli Pir and beyond can be had from its vantage point, which is elevated on the western edge of Poonch airfield. Perched on a ten-foot-high basement, Baldev Mahal is a marvel of double-story architecture that seamlessly blends English and Kashmiri design. A 12-foot-wide corridor connects the 21 rooms on the ground floor, which also house the Raja's personal office, a conference hall, and a Darbar hall. Ten large rooms, including those for the king, queen, and guests, are accessible from the first floor via 24 steps that lead from the southern entrance. The inner premises are completed with security rooms and a kitchen building, with a small temple serving religious ceremonies on the ground floor. Furthermore, Padam Mahal, another two-story structure inside the palace, was built for Padam Dev Singh, Raja Baldev Singh's third son. The Palace complex includes Mahal building, Padam Mahal, Gardens, Vegetable fields and playfield. The complex is spread over 6.38 acres of land. The stone, lime, deodar and walnut wood have been used for the construction of the Palace. In 2005, Baldev Mahal suffered severe damage during a devastating earthquake, leaving walls fissured and roofs broken. Occupied by defense forces, it was deemed unsafe and abandoned. Neglected until 2015, when Officer Y.K. Gautam recognized its cultural significance and advocated for its restoration. Finally, in March 2016, restoration efforts began. Over the past year, the main residence area, once occupied by Raja Baldev Singh's family, has been meticulously restored and made habitable once more. Indulging in its rich history or admiring its magnificent architecture, Baldev Mahal beckons visitors to take a trip back in time, where each turn unveils a fresh chapter in Poonch District's past.
