Dedicated to Lord Shiva, Peer Kho Temple is one of the worth visiting places in Jammu. In the local dialect ‘Kho’ means ‘Cave’ and Peer got its name from saint Guru Garib Nath who is believed to have lived here in the 15th century. The saint was later known as Peer-i-kho. Hence the place got its name. It is also known as Jamvant Gufa as the bear hero of Ramayana is believed to have meditated here. The temple consists of two caves that are 20 to 30 ft. deep. One cave is 3 ft long and the other is 12 ft. long with a naturally formed Shiva Lingam in the centre. This ancient temple is important to both locals and visitors because of its religious and historical significance which dates back to the Mahabharata era. It is said that these caves provided shelter to the Pandavas during their exile. According to legend, Lord Krishna used to visit this serene spot to seek the sage's wisdom. One of the most fascinating features of Peer Kho Temple is its natural cave formations, which add a mystical aura to the surroundings. Exploring these ancient caves is like stepping back in time, feeling the whispers of history echoing through the stalactites and stalagmites. As you wander through the temple complex, you'll be greeted by the soothing chants of prayers and the fragrant aroma of incense. Peer Kho Temple also holds an annual festival, known as the Peer Kho Mela, which attracts devotees from far and wide. This vibrant celebration is marked by devotional songs, traditional dances, and a lively market selling local handicrafts and delicacies.
