Tucked away in Jammu's charming Poonch District, Poonch Fort silently bears witness to centuries of past. Constructed with robust architecture, the fort embodies the legends of bravery and victory that reverberate within its walls. Raja Rustam Khan constructed the fort in the sixteenth century, and it was subsequently enlarged and reconstructed by a number of emperors, including the Mughals and the Dogras. Originally, the Poonch district was called "Rustam Nagar" in his honor. Historians refer to the years 1850–1947, when Maharaja Ranjeet Singh of the Dogra dynasty ruled this fort, as the "golden period." The central block's construction style is a reflection of the Sikh rule over the area from 1819 to 1846. The front block design reflects the empathy that Raja Moti Singh had for fashion and ethnicity. For those who are interested in history and architecture, the fort is a must-visit location as it is a testament to the region's rich cultural heritage. Poonch Fort, strategically positioned on a hill, defended against invaders during Poonch's time as a separate state ruled by Rajas. It played a crucial role in historical events like the Anglo-Sikh Wars and the Indian Rebellion of 1857, also serving as a cultural hub for poets, scholars, and musicians seeking patronage. Poonch Fort showcases a unique blend of Mughal and Dogra architectural styles, with thick, sophisticated walls spanning meters. Situated on a hill covering 4 acres, it boasts breathtaking views of mountains and valleys. Within its walls lie cultural gems like the Sheesh Mahal, adorned with intricate glasswork, the Diwan-i-Khas for private audiences, and the Rang Mahal, a royal palace. Additionally, the fort houses temples and mosques, such as the Jama Masjid and the Noori Chamb, reflecting the region's rich cultural heritage. A hike to Poonch Fort is essential for adventure seekers. With views of the area's natural beauty along the way, the ascent up the hill is just as rewarding as the destination itself.
