Dachigam National Park

Covering an area of 141 sq. km, Dachigam National Park is located in the stunning Zabarwan Himalayan landscape in Srinagar. It is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers alike. Its name, "Dachigam," translates to "ten villages," reflecting its historical role in providing resources for nearby settlements. This biodiverse sanctuary is home to a rich variety of flora and fauna, including the elusive Hangul deer or Kashmir Stag, which finds its last refuge here. Established in 1910, initially as a game reserve for the royal family of Jammu and Kashmir, Dachigam National Park holds a significant place in conservation history. It was later declared a national park in 1981 to protect its unique ecosystem and wildlife. The park's rugged terrain, encompassing forests, meadows, and steep slopes, provides a natural habitat for several endangered species, including the Kashmir stag and the Himalayan black bear. Beyond its ecological importance, Dachigam also holds cultural significance, with ancient temples and shrines scattered throughout its expanse, offering glimpses into the region's rich heritage. Visitors to the park can embark on thrilling wildlife safaris, trekking adventures, or simply revel in the tranquillity of nature amidst the majestic Himalayan peaks.
