VASUKI NAAG TEMPLE

Bhaderwah, also known as the land of nagas is rich in history and culture. The place is well known for its four Vasuki Naag Temples. One finds Vasuki Naag temples at Gatha, Nelthi, Beja and Nagar Bhaderwah. But the one which is revered a lot and from the holy Kailash Kund Yatra begins is in Gatha. It dates back to 11th century and houses the magnificent single-stone idols of Vasuki Naag known as the ‘King of Serpents’ and Raja Jamute Vahan. The idols are carved out of black stone and mysteriously hanging at 87° without any support. The inclining idols can be rightly compared to the leaning towers of Egypt. Maharaj Dhuri Pal initiated the construction of this temple at Vasak Dhera and the idols were sculptured by the Shanu community.
