The historically and culturally significant Naag Mandir is located in the quiet Patnitop neighbourhood of Jammu's Udhampur district. The serpent god Lord Naag is honoured in this historic temple, which is particularly dear to both devotees and tourists. Situated atop a hill in Mantalai, the 600-year-old Naag Mandir is believed to be the location of Lord Shiva's marriage to Goddess Parvati. Here, people worship snakes and present the god with sweets and prayers. The temple, which is surrounded by verdant foliage and snow-capped mountain peaks, welcomes thousands of pilgrims during the Naag Panchami festival, which is when snake worship is customary. Considered to be among the nation's oldest temples, Naag Mandir offers breathtaking views of the Chenab Gorge and pine forests. It is a widely held belief among the devotees that their prayers at this temple will be granted. So, after praying to Naag Devta and tying a sacred red thread, those whose prayers are granted return to host an open kitchen, or langar, where they feed everyone free food. It is strictly forbidden to take pictures inside the temple. In fact, a local myth that has been spreading among devotees may even serve as a deterrent: it claims that anyone caught sneaking in their cameras and snapping pictures will suffer from nightmares. When going for darshan, this usually prompts visitors to leave their DSLRs and smartphones behind. Those looking for spiritual comfort in a beautiful setting should definitely visit Naag Mandir. This sacred site promises an enriching experience for everyone who visits, be they a traveller exploring Jammu's rich cultural heritage or a devotee seeking blessings.
