Because of lush vegetation and a wide variety of flora and fauna, this biodiversity is a haven. Hirpora Wildlife Sanctuary was founded in 1987 and is well-known for its extensive historical significance that spans centuries. The former rulers of Kashmir used it as a hunting ground, exhibiting a fusion of natural beauty and cultural legacy. Hirpora Wildlife Sanctuary is named after Pir Panjal saint Sheikh Noor-ud-Din Noorani, also known as Nund Rishi or Sheikh-ul-Alam, who meditated in the sanctuary's serene surroundings centuries ago. Covering an area of 341 square kilometres, the sanctuary is bordered to the north by Lake Gumsar, to the northeast by Hirpora village, to the east by Rupri, to the south by Saransar, and to the west by the Pir Panjal pass. The sanctuary is home to a variety of wildlife species, including the elusive Hangul deer, markhor, musk deer, and the majestic Himalayan black bear. Birdwatchers will delight in spotting species like the black bulbul, monal pheasant, and Himalayan golden eagle, among others. One of the unique features of Hirpora Wildlife Sanctuary is its breathtaking landscape, characterized by dense forests, gushing streams, and cascading waterfalls.
