Hemis National Park

Hemis National Park in Leh is a treasure trove of natural beauty and wildlife. Established in 1981, it's India's largest national park, covering around 4,400 square kilometres. The park is named after the famous Hemis Monastery, which is located nearby and adds a spiritual touch to the region. Hemis National Park is most famous for being a sanctuary for the elusive snow leopard, often called the "ghost of the mountains." The park is home to a significant population of these majestic creatures, making it one of the best places in the world for snow leopard spotting. The landscape of Hemis National Park is rugged, with steep valleys, high-altitude plains, and towering peaks, some of which reach over 6,000 meters. The Markha River flows through the park, providing a lifeline for the diverse flora and fauna. Apart from snow leopards, the park also hosts a variety of other wildlife, including the Himalayan ibex, Tibetan wolf, and the rare red fox. The Himalayan and Trans-Himalayan griffon vulture, golden eagle, and lammergeier vulture are some of the predatory birds of prey that are mentioned here. Opportunities for birdwatching, including several Tibetan species uncommon in other parts of India, are provided by the Rumbak Valley. The brown accentor, robin accentor, black-winged snowfinch, Tickell's leaf warbler, chukar, red-billed chough, Blyth's swift, Himalayan snowcock, and fire-fronted serin are among the birds that can be seen here. There are currently 73 species of birds and 16 species of mammals known to exist in the park. For trekkers, Hemis National Park offers some of the most challenging and rewarding trails in the Himalayas. The Markha Valley trek is especially popular, offering breathtaking views of the mountains and a chance to experience the remote lifestyle of the local villagers. In winter, when the snow covers the landscape, the park takes on a different character, with the silence of the cold air only broken by the occasional call of a snow leopard or the crunch of snow underfoot. Hemis National Park is not just a place to visit; it's a place to experience the wild heart of the Himalayas. Hemis National Park in Ladakh is a treasure trove of natural beauty and wildlife.
