Also known as ‘Cave Monastery,’ the Phuktal Monastery is an architectural wonder and a monument to centuries of spiritual devotion, nestled among the untamed mountains of Kargil. This historic monastery is carved into the precipitous cliffs of the isolated Zanskar Valley, resembling a treasure awaiting exploration. To reach this place one has to trek and it will offer one a rich experience of Zanskari Culture. A combination of two words ‘Phuk’ means ‘Cave’ and ‘Tal’ or ‘Thal’ means ‘at leisure.’ The trek will take around two to three days. One has to reach the village Padum in Zanskar. From here, a drive of 30 minutes will take the tourists to Ichar or Lchar. From here tourists have to trek to reach Phuktal/Phugtal Monastery. At more than 2,500 years old, Phuktal Monastery is one of Ladakh's oldest Buddhist monastic complexes and has a rich historical significance. Legends abound about its beginnings, including stories of Guru Padmasambhava meditating in the numerous caves dotted along the nearby cliffs. The Phuktal Monastery has absolutely breathtaking architecture. Its golden spires and whitewashed walls contrast with the untamed surroundings, giving guests a breathtaking view.The monastery, in spite of its isolated location, holds an annual festival to commemorate Buddhist customs and rituals that draws pilgrims and tourists from all over the world. Essentially, Phuktal Monastery is a living example of the perseverance of faith and fortitude in the face of the untamed beauty of the Himalayas, not just a place of worship. Anyone who is fortunate enough to experience its tranquillity and charm will undoubtedly have lasting memories from their visit.
