The Aghar Jitto Temple in Jammu is a historically and spiritually significant location that is tucked away amid the picturesque Reasi district. Both locals and tourists have a particular place in their hearts for this historic temple. The temple honours Baba Jitto, a legendary personified by his unselfish dedication to farming and agriculture. His lessons of perseverance, humility, and kindness have stood the test of time, and the temple has come to represent rural values and way of life. Legend has it that in the village of Aghar Jitto, water was scarce, and Baba Jitto, a devout worshiper of Mata Vaishno Devi, prayed for its arrival. After 12 years of daily worship, the goddess granted his wish, causing seven streams to flow in the village. Renowned for his devotion and hard work, Baba Jitto transformed barren land into fertile fields. However, when a feudal lord tried to seize his harvest unfairly, Baba Jitto chose justice over compromise and tragically ended his life. His daughter, Bua Kouri, grieving his loss, also perished by her own hand. Their sacrifice is commemorated annually at Baba Jitto's Samadhi in Jhiri, where a fair is held in their honour. Today, Baba Jitto is revered as a symbol of righteousness and courage, with locals offering grains to him before partaking themselves, continuing his legacy of justice and faith. Every year in June, the Baba Jitto Mandir Development Committee and the District Administration collaborate to host the three-day Aghar Jitto mela at the Baba Jitto temple in the village of Aghar also. The town of Katra is only five kilometres away from the temple. From its humble beginnings, the mela has developed into a much-loved destination for tourists from various areas. Individuals of all ages take part in the event with great fervor and excitement. Due to its connection to the sacred Shrine of Mata Vaishno Devi, the event has grown in significance.
