The captivating pair of Sudh Mahadev and Mantalai, a haven for history buffs and nature lovers alike, are nestled away in the tranquil hills of Jammu's Udhampur district. A testament to the rich cultural legacy of the area is Sudh Mahadev, with its historic temple devoted to Lord Shiva. This temple is situated at an altitude of 1,225 metres. According to legend, a local king by the name of Sudhanva constructed the temple more than 3000 years ago. Devotees travel from far and wide to the temple to see the natural black marble Lingam, which is thought to be Lord Shiva manifesting himself. It also includes Lord Shiva's trident and a mace that is thought to be Bhima's. Outside the temple is a stepwell where water is continuously supplied all year round. It is said that taking a bath in it erases all sin. After bathing in this stepwell, the majority of devotees visit the temple. The place has an even more spiritual aura during the colourful celebration of the annual Maha Shivratri festival. Devak, the mysterious underground stream that is thought to be as sacred as the Ganges, begins at Sudh Mahadev and vanishes amidst the rocks a short distance downstream. Moreover intriguing are locally made wooden sculptures. At 3 kms from Sudh Mahadev lies Gauri Kund. It is believed that Goddess Parvati used to bathe in GauriKund before she worshipped Shivalinga in Sudh Mahadev.
