Ranbireshwar Temple

Located in the centre of the Jammu district, the charming Ranbireshwar Temple awaits you. With its regal architecture and extensive cultural legacy, this historical wonder rises to prominence. Maharaja Ranbir Singh (1857–1885) of Jammu and Kashmir constructed the temple circa 1880 AD as part of his endeavour to transform Jammu City into the City of Temples, modelled after Kashi (Banaras). He was successful in his endeavour, which is why Jammu is still referred to as the City of Temples today. In addition, he constructed numerous other shrines and temples both inside and outside of Jammu, which is indicative of Ranbir Singh's religious beliefs. The main temple of Lord Shiva is located on the first floor, and in front of the temple is a statue of Shri Ranbir Singh, who is seen praying to Lord Shiva with his hands folded. This makes the temple unique. Inside the main temple, devotees are drawn to a massive single stone Shivlingam in addition to life-size idols of Lord Shiva, his consort Parvati, and son Ganesha. Facing the main idols, a massive life-size brass metallic Nandi is situated at the entrance of the main temple. Maharaja Ranbir Singh brought the unique Ekadash Lingams from Banaras, which are rarely seen in the Shiva temples. They are made of Safatik, a unique transparent white stone. Not only that, but Shaligrams in two of the temple's adjacent halls were specially brought from the Narmada River's bed. This temple was constructed on a small hill, and a saint used to meditate there. The saint's Samadhi was constructed in the vast expanse of open space beneath the temple. On the saint's advice, the Shivlingam was positioned at the highest point on that hillock. This temple is unlike most others in that it has a large area where worshippers can sit and practice meditation. The Ranbireshwar Temple provides a moving voyage through devotion and time.
