Perched on the serene banks of the mighty Chenab River, the historic Akhnoor Fort is a site to be adorned by history lovers. This magnificent fort serves as a reminder of the region's rich history and heritage. Work on the fort was initiated in 1762 on the orders of Raja Tegh Singh which was culminated by his son Raja Alam Singh in 1802. Nestled on a cliff, this magnificent fort has been under Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) since 1982 and has been declared a national monument protected under the Monument Act, 1958. What makes the place more important is the evidence of Harappan civilization, early historic pottery and the Kushan objects which were found at this place. Stepping into the Akhnoor Fort is like stepping back through time. Its fortified walls and imposing towers tell stories of battles fought and victories achieved. The fort's strategic location overlooking the Chenab River made it a vital stronghold for numerous rulers throughout history. It has seen numerous invasions and power shifts over the years, each with its own impact on the fort's architecture and character. One of the most intriguing aspects of Akhnoor Fort is its underground tunnels, which are said to lead to secret chambers and hidden passages.
