Two quaint towns rich in history and culture are Purmandal and Utterbehni, which are snuggled away in the tranquil surroundings of Jammu's Samba district. Purmandal, also referred to as ‘Chhota Kashi’ is famous for Lord Shiva ancient temples. With their elaborate architecture and centuries-old construction, the temples provide insight into the rich religious history of the area. Pilgrims who wish to purify their souls by submerging themselves in the sacred Devika River, popularly known as the "Gupt Ganga," place a great deal of significance on Purmandal village. Uttarbehni (North Flowing), another significant temple complex in the area, is located about 3 km from Purmandal. The river Devika here, as its name would imply, turns and flows northward, which is unusual for rivers worldwide. Maharaja Gulab Singh constructed the Gadadhar temple here in 1850. His heirs constructed the other temples devoted to Lord Shiva. The village is approximately 1,500 meters (4,900 feet) above sea level, offering a pleasant climate throughout the year. Its strategic location provides stunning panoramic views of the mountains, lush green valleys, and cascading waterfalls. Utterbehni is blessed with a rich diversity of flora and fauna, making it a paradise for nature enthusiasts and wildlife lovers. One of the prominent attractions in Utterbehni is its beautiful forest area. The village is surrounded by dense forests that boast a variety of trees, including oak, pine, deodar, and rhododendron. These forests enhance scenic beauty and serve as an important habitat for numerous wildlife species, such as Himalayan black bears, leopards, musk deer, and a wide range of bird species. Whether you're seeking spiritual solace or outdoor adventure, Purmandal and Utterbehni offer a captivating blend of history, culture, and natural beauty, making them must-visit destinations in the heart of Jammu.
